This essential oil smells rancid, can it be?

Posted on: January 12, 2018

Essential oils don’t become rancid. If you do smell rancidity in that old bottle of essential oil, it’s an indicator that it was likely cut with a fatty carrier oil. Essential oil do oxidize. That does change the aroma, but in a way that’s more like a removal of smell rather than an addition of a smell. Citrus essential oils oxidize more quickly than other essential oils and oxidized essential oils are more likely to cause dermal irritation. Essential oils don’t ferment, that requires sugar and there shouldn’t be any in a pure essential oil. Offering a shelf life for an essential oil is basically impossible because there are too many variables, ie, volume of essential oil in relation to volume of air in the bottle, temperature, how often the cap is removed.
